Studying, Working, and Writing It Down

Notes from my MBA studies, the questions I bring back to work, and the pieces I write for my website

I'm studying for an MBA while bringing what I learn back to the work I'm doing. When we cover costs, for example, I want to see what changes if the classroom case becomes a software development or systems integration company. How would we explain the costs then? What could someone doing work like mine actually use?

Starting with familiar work leads to more questions. Software projects have labor costs and take time. How does the picture change if the company also owns software or earns subscription revenue? That line of inquiry has taken me into accounting, revenue recognition, and company valuation. Some questions call for numbers and a worked calculation. For others, I first build a hypothetical company before writing about them.

Those conversations gradually become articles on my website. When I began writing about economics, I wanted to lay the groundwork first. A reader dropped straight into a business example might not have enough context. As the explanation grew, it became several articles. I had to organize them into a series so readers could start with the first part and follow the ideas in order.

As I put each piece together, I go back to ask for more background, add examples, and check whether the article still matches the course material. I do the same with my notes on long-term investing. I want language I can return to and understand, with the important conditions intact, without simply copying out another set of class notes.

My personal website now holds subjects I'm studying alongside questions from work. Some questions are still experiments. I have already made the decision about ending the office lease. I plan to try working entirely from home for about three months, possibly extending that to six. That belongs on the website too, but I need to say plainly what has happened and what I still have to observe.

Because this is my own story, I pay closer attention to the language. Some sentences sounded as though I were introducing Supaket to someone else. I asked to change them to "my website" or "this website" where they fit. I want readers to hear me telling the story as I would in conversation: what I'm reading, what I'm trying, and which questions are still open.

The line I've chosen for this website is "Stories of work, technology, my MBA, and travel." Work and study already meet in several articles. Some topics have become a series; others, such as working from home, still need time to play out. Learning and decisions are happening together in this part of my life. My website is keeping a record of them as they are.
