At 45, I’m Exploring a US PhD Through Business and AI Questions

A possible scholarship route, research questions I want to develop, and a Top 100 rule I still need to confirm.

Suppose an ERP system spots a purchase order with an unusual price, and AI recommends which orders need closer human review. Before using that advice in real work, I would want to know whether it reduces bad approvals, what we should compare it with, and who can see and correct a wrong recommendation in time. This example explains a question that interests me; it is not a project already run or a result already measured.

I am 45, have completed an Executive MBA, and have worked with software for business operations for many years. I am now exploring PhD study in the United States because a university may have a scholarship route through which it could sponsor my studies. What I know so far is that I would need admission to a Top 100 university. I still have to confirm which ranking, which year, and whether that means the university overall or the subject. The schools here are possibilities I am researching, not an announcement of funding or admission.

I want to spend time asking and testing where AI actually helps businesses, especially where people, processes, and information systems have to work together.

From a company problem to a research question

In company work, we may see a problem in one task and quickly design a fix. Research would require me to say more clearly what I am comparing, how I would measure the result, and how far it might apply beyond one organization. The ERP example could become a question about which kinds of human review of AI suggestions reduce wrong decisions without making work wait too long. This is still an initial idea, not an approved dissertation topic.

Compare with the existing method
Research questions from a hypothetical case. Define the comparison and measurable outcome before saying AI advice helps real work.

I want to connect what I learned in management with my experience building systems so I can ask testable questions about cost, management, and business outcomes. To turn that into research, I would need to read prior work, choose a method, and find evidence that others can examine. This matters especially when data involves a company or its customers: having access to data does not give me permission to use it for research.

Four programs I am reading about while the ranking rule remains unclear

I began with Information Systems and related fields that study how technology changes decisions and work in organizations. In the QS World University Rankings 2027 overall list, MIT is No. 1, Carnegie Mellon is No. 55, the University of Washington is tied at No. 92, and Purdue is tied at No. 100.

I use this list to choose what to read next, provisionally. I cannot yet say that all four meet the sponsor’s criteria, especially Purdue at the boundary, because the actual Top 100 rule is still unclear. A professor working on a related topic also may not be taking students when I apply.

The application dates below are for Fall 2027, when study would begin in 2027. The sponsor still needs to confirm which ranking edition its Top 100 rule uses.

Four programs I am researching. Funding information reflects publicly stated conditions; an individual offer must be checked separately.
Program Why I am looking further Funding and conditions to verify
Carnegie Mellon Heinz, PhD in Information Systems and Management It connects information systems, management, and data-based research. I would test whether faculty and methods there can support a question about AI in business processes. The funding page describes tuition and first-year support, while later years depend on conditions and research or teaching work. I would need the details of an actual offer; the application page lists tests and a research proposal.
Purdue Daniels School of Business, PhD in Management, Management Information Systems It studies AI in business, human-AI collaboration, and digital systems, close to my initial question. But the program trains researchers for academic careers, so I would need to explain the contribution to general knowledge beyond one company’s work. The funding page describes tuition and support for up to five years subject to progress. Health insurance is partly covered, and some fees remain the student’s responsibility. The Fall 2027 application closes January 15, 2027, and requires GRE or GMAT.
UW Foster PhD Program, Information Systems PhD Specialization The program studies how technology is developed and used in organizations, including effects on business models. It also states clearly that it trains researchers. I would need to compare my question with actual faculty work. The admissions page says the school aims to support students for at least four years if they progress and meet work expectations. That is a goal, not an individual funding guarantee. The program page lists tuition waivers, stipends, and health insurance. I would need an actual offer and to compare my mathematics background with the program’s stated expectations (IS specialization).
MIT Sloan PhD Program, Information Technology group The group’s research on the digital economy, organizations, and AI’s effect on business is close to my interests. But I would need an independent research question clearer than improving a product for my own company. The funding page describes five years of tuition, health insurance, and support for students in good academic standing. The Fall 2027 application closes December 1, 2026, and the IT group requires GRE.

CMU Heinz and Purdue MIS are the first two whose faculty research I would read closely, because their field descriptions initially connect AI with organizational questions more directly. For UW Foster, I need to compare my mathematics background with its expectations. For MIT Sloan, I need to develop a stronger independent question first. This order organizes my checks; it says nothing about admission chances.

UT Dallas Jindal Information Systems is another program that fits business-systems work. But the QS 2027 overall ranking places UT Dallas tied at No. 686. If the sponsor uses this QS 2027 overall list, the program would not meet a Top 100 requirement, so I would not group it with the four above until I know the real ranking rule. Research fit and scholarship eligibility must be checked separately.

What my record shows, and what it does not

My background includes computer engineering, information technology management, and an Executive MBA. I also have a conference paper (ICSEC 2017) on scheduling parallel software tests. It shows I have done research, but it does not replace recent research in AI or business.

Before applying, I need transcripts and course descriptions, valid test scores, and a complete list of potential recommenders. Work history alone does not show how ready I am for each program’s research methods. Preparation starts with evidence others can check.

  1. Request transcripts and course descriptions to check mathematics, statistics, economics, and research-methods preparation against each program’s requirements.
  2. Draft a two-page research idea with the question, relevant prior work, comparison method, and data that can properly be used. Organize earlier writing or research so readers can assess my reasoning.
  3. Talk with people who might recommend me and can describe research ability from work they actually know. Check the number and type of letters each school wants: Purdue asks for at least two, while UW Foster asks for three and favors recommenders familiar with academic ability.
  4. Check GRE or GMAT and English-language evidence against the actual program and test year. Language requirements may use a TOEFL scale different from older information, as in UW’s current policy. A degree or English-language work experience does not automatically grant a waiver.

Clarify both sides of funding and my company work

A possible scholarship from a Thai university, admission to a US program, and funding offered by that US institution are separate matters. First I need to learn which Top 100 rule the sponsor uses. Then I need to know who pays tuition, living costs, insurance, and research expenses; whether the awards can be held together; what teaching or research work is required; and whether I would have a return-to-work or teaching commitment. Funding conclusions must await written terms from each side.

Top 100 rule
Admission
Funding terms on both sides
Three separate checks: rank under the sponsor’s rule, admission by the program, and each side’s funding terms. Passing one does not establish the others.

I also need to speak plainly about my continuing involvement in my own business. Full-time PhD study may limit work outside the university, research agreements, and intellectual property rights. One clear example is Indiana Kelley’s rule that full-time students may not undertake outside paid work, including self-employment. That is Kelley’s rule, not a conclusion about every school.

MIT’s guidance on student intellectual property shows that the source of work, such as coursework versus sponsored research, can affect rights. It cannot replace another school’s agreements. If I study in F-1 status, I will need to ask the institution’s international-student office directly about the company roles I actually perform. US agency guidance explains the F-1 student employment framework, but it does not automatically resolve my business situation.

Before paying application fees or accepting an offer, I would want written answers from the Thai university that may sponsor me, the admitting program, and the international-student office about funding, company work, research-data use, intellectual property, and obligations after study. Those answers tell me which paths are feasible. The research question tells me whether I should spend years pursuing one.

Program and policy information was checked against official sites on October 27, 2026. Deadlines and individual funding offers may change. The ERP example and research question are proposals for further thought, not study results.
